Subject: re Charles Edward Rushworth and Annie Emmot

Thank you for your family history website, I am the granddaughter or Charles and Annie

Rushworth (nee Emmot) and the daughter of John Evelyn, Charles eldest child- born 20th November 1899 married to Mabel Elizabeth Letherbarrow 1924 and died Brisbane Queensland 1973, Charles and Anne's other two children were Mary Anne and Louise

Do you have access to information about when Charles Edward and Annie came to Australia, from records I have been able to access it was round 1912, and from these records it appears that Charles came before Annie and the children, Annie accompanied by Charles sister Ethel, who lived with them and never married.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope it finds you well, and once again thank you for the comprehensive entris in Our Family History, sincerely Jill Webb

Email from Mike Binns dated 12/04/1912

Dear Jill

I was delighted to receive a copy of your email to Edward and a copy of his reply to you. We are second cousins.

My grandmother was Charles Edward's sister Minnie. John Rushworth and Mary Ann nee Riley had ten children, Charles being the eldest and Minnie second. Minnie married my grandfather Benjamin Binns in 1895. Benjamin had a son, Stanley (born 1889), with his first wife, Mary Thornton Bottomley, who died in 1894. Stanley emigrated to Australia in 1912 - he sailed from Grimsby to Antwerp on 25 September and then from Antwerp to Australia on SS Room arriving at Sydney on 15 November. Charles and his family followed shortly after. I have a copy of the passenger list for the ship Scharnhorst which sailed from Bremen to Sydney arriving there on 7 February 1913. They are listed as:

188 Mr. Chas. E. Rushworth Plumber 40

189 Mrs. Annie E. Rushworth 35

190 Miss Ethel Rushworth 25

191 Mr. John E. Rushworth 12

192 Child Mary Rushworth

193 Child Ada L. Rushworth

I think that they also must have joined the ship at Antwerp as I have a postcard which Ethel send to Minnie from there. It is postmarked 20 December 1912 and reads:

"Dear Brother and Sister.

We had an awful rough crossing from Grimsby to Antwerp all of us were sick but Charlie We arrived in Antwerp about half past eight We have been having a look round to day The eating as been very good so far on Sh Scharnhost. Give my love to them all.

your loving sister Ethel"

I can copy it for you if you like. I also have a diary kept by Stanley recording his voyage to Australia.

I can't give you any information on John Rushworth's ancestors that is not included in Edward Rushworth's excellent website, but I do have a lot of information on Mary Ann Riley's family which I can send to you. I can also let you have all the census details for Charles Edward before he left England if you don't have them.

I think I have too much information to send as email attachments, but I could put it all on a CD or print it out and post it to you. If you would like me to do this please let me know which method you would prefer and your address.

Benjamin and Minnie had five children - Eveline, Beatrice, Allan, Edith Annie and Clifford (who died in infancy). Allan was my father and I also have a cousin, Marian, daughter of Beatrice. I remember in the early 1950s we had a visit from Australian cousins, but whether they were connected to Stanley or Charles Edward I can't remember (I was only about 5 or 6 at the time). I know there was some contact over the years as my auntie Edith used to write to Ethel.

I don't know much about the Australian side of the family other than the attached which I have put together from records available online. Perhaps you could let me know if I have got anything wrong.

Very best wishes

Mike Binns
